UPDATE: - Photo 01 found.
Thanks to clues put together from people around the world Photo 01 has been found! This is Espejo in Spain. Here's the Google street view link that Stephen Mendonca sent through. Thank you so very much Stephen. This came through after the Washington Post reported on the last two missing photos and Elvira Santos from Spain also sent in numerous clues which identified Espejo and it's castle as the correct spot. I still can#39;t believe it. I'll be adding Espejo to the trip page in the future. Hopefully I'll get to visit one day and retake this photo too. This was a huge effort from many people to find this seemingly unrecognisable spot.
Thank you!

Photo 01 Found!
CLUE 01 - The Photo
This photo was always going to be tough but after a few of the others were identified in Switzerland I started to think this was part of the same series. Mainly because it seems to be taken from a train like others in Switzerland. The sideways blur in the photo giving it away. Photo 14, Photo 27 and Photo 04 have this and were found on the train line from Zurich to Interlaken. Then a few of photos were identified in Interlaken itself so I knew Grandpa was in Interlaken and that he caught a train in Switzerland - starting or finishing in Interlaken West train station. Photo 23 clearly has the station sign in it.
The biggest clue from the photo are the two bodies of water. One a man made canal, the other a seems like a river or stream. Because of the other photos found in this area, mainly Interlaken, I jumped straight to Interlaken on a map. And sure enough there was a man made, canal, right next to another body of water, just outside the train station Grandpa visited. I was excited and thought we might just find this one after all. I just had to get myself to Interlaken.
CLUE 02 - Everyone Else
All the emails I received about this photo pointed to this area around Interlaken too. I didn't get as many as some of the other photos but it backed up my theory. If you have any more clues or comments feel free to add yours via Facebook here.
CLUE 03 - The Trip
Once I got to Interlaken I was pretty excited. Mainly because other photos in and around Interlaken were fairly easy to find. Everything was working out. I just presumed that Photo 31 would too. I drove south along the train line that I'm pretty sure Grandpa traveled on, finding some of the tougher shots like Photo 04 (see the old and new shots below) and Photo 27. I wasn't even keeping a look out for this missing photo as I was so sure it was closer to Interlaken West Train Station.

Grandpa's original - Missing
I found the canal on the map near the Train Station but it was much more built up around the banks than in Grandpa's photo. It wasn't right. Had they changed it since Grandpa was there? I drove out of town along the canal thinking it would materialze in front of me. I drove and drove..., and drove around all the canals in that area. I drove the hire car on farmlands. I drove down weird one way tracks, the wrong way, in the hopes of finding something similar. No luck. The canal I had seen on a map now had large industrial buildings in between it and the river behind. I thought maybe that's why I wasn't finding this one. I was so sure it was here.
I'd decided too many things were certain. Firstly, this may not have been taken from a train. It may not be part of the same series of photos that had made me believe it was in this area at all. On The Trip I felt like I went to the spot in Grandpa's photo but it had just changed. Now, after getting home I wish I'd remembered that nothing is 100% sure.

CLUE 04 - The Other Slides
So the clues we were left with on this photo are pretty basic. The two bodies of water. It's taken from a train or a car. Most people think it's Europe, probably Switzerland. I didn't have much.

Then I discovered the tiny numbers on the slides that had helped so much with Photo 31. I decided to apply the same theory from that revelation to this photo. Basically, the numbers on the original slides are the shot number on the roll of film that Grandpa took and the date is the date he had them processed.

Slide 4 MAR 66

Slides 2 and 3
Photo 31 is number 4 in the roll processed in MAR 66. Once I pulled out all the slides with red numbers and March 66 on them it does seem like Grandpa took this photo in Switzerland.
There are multiple films with MAR 66 though so it is tough to say anything for sure. This means there are multiple number 4's and multiples of the numbers around it.
After laying them all out you can see a narrative that seems like the slides around the missing photo 31. I was able to find what you can see here as slide 7 in Olten which is similar in color to the missing photo. Slides number 11, 12 and 13 shown here were found in Zurich. Slides 6, 14 and 15 were found in Biel. And slide 16 is the one that finally made me accept that Grandpa may not have been in a train but in a car. You can see the bonnet in the bottom of the shot.

Slides 4 and 5

Slides 6 and 7

Slides 11 and 12

Slides 13 and 14
From this sequence of slides you can see that it does seem like Photo 31 is in Switzerland. Probably on the way from Zurich to Biel. Grandpa being closer to Zurich or Olten when he took this missing photo rather than farther south in Interlaken as I had previously thought.

Slides 15 and 16
So this opens up new possibilities on a map as I was previously following the train line. The mistake I made on The Trip was focusing on Interlaken for this one. I should have kept an eye out for a man made canal next to another body of water along the way.

AARE RIVER - Near Interlaken, Switzerland
A couple of people have pointed to the Aare river near Interlaken as Photo 31. This feels like the right sort of area but after hunting around on Google street view I haven't been able to find anything too close.
A couple of things about this area - The canal in photo 31 is next to or near another body of water. This probably hasn't changed so that helps when hunting around on maps. The other thing is that the area in the photo isn’t very built up. This may have changed but in general the other photos in this area were pretty close today, as they are in Grandpa's originals. But it could be here somewhere. If anyone is passing through or lives nearby it may need eyes on the ground to find the photo or rule this area out. Maybe I'm missing something more obvious?

NOT WATER? - Maybe fog or a reflection
Lots of people have been reminding me not to jump to conclusions when trying to work this out. People have emailed saying that the 'second body of water' (The white area behind some trees in the right of frame not the canal.) may in fact be a reflection, fog or similar. This is really important as it could change what to look for when looking on a map.when looking on a map. This obviously has big implications. Thanks to everyone sending this through. I have made a bunch of wrong assumptions that have't helped - thanks for keeping me thinking.
It looks like water to me but people who have lived in this area of the world probably know better and many people form Switzerland and neighboring countries have been saying the same thing - This might not be water. The bigger issue here is what are we left with if it's not a second body of water. The canal may have been filled in by now too. The clues are running thin here if it's not what it seems.

NO CANAL? - Maps from before 1970
This project has been amazing in so many ways. My mind is blown daily with the messages and help sent through to this site. The email from Tony McAteer is definitely one of those. Tony found a site that shows Swiss maps going back in time. This is super helpful as many of the inferences we've all been making are based on this area and maps from today. Tony not only sent this but found a spot in the area Grandpa would have been. He identified what may very well be the location of Photo 31. It shows how in 1969 the canal is filled in and could be a huge clue for people looking - as the canal may no longer be there.
Take a look at the images and check out Swisstopo - on this site - move the year slider at the top to see the canal disappear after 1969. Grandpa would have been in this area around 1964 - 1967 so this makes a lot of sense if this is the location of Photo 31. The current Google street view images for this area are pretty sparse. The road or traintrack Grandpa may have taken the photo from are still there but Streetview isn't available on these particular roads just yet. The only way to know for sure would be to go there and check it out. Please let me know if anyone does.

Thanks Tony! Brilliant find.

EAST OLTEN - Multiple people pointing here
Two different people - Jon Knowles on Facebook and Peter Ward via email - pointed to the same spot on Google maps so I'm taking it pretty seriously. The landscape does match up and it's in the area that Grandpa's slides indicate he was. This is East of Olten on the Aare River in Switzerland. It's tough to get a good angle on it via Google street view but it could be the spot. The view would now include the Kernkraftwerk Gösgen-Däniken Nueclear power plant if it is. This was built in the 70's after Grandpa would have been there so that bit makes sense. The canal and second body of water seem right and the angle also seems right. Grandpa's original photo seems to look down a canal which is very straight and then veers to the right. Anyone in that area would need to find an angle that matched this better. Street view has some trees in the way.

Thanks so much Jon and Peter for this!

UZANACH - Landscape looks right
Another clue sent through which could be the spot is near Uzanach in Switzerland. This is at the bottom of the lake that borders Zurich which is about the same sort of distance that Grandpa would have been from the last few photos he took in this area. The other suggestions are to the west of here but maybe he went south. Looking on Google street view the canal looks right and the pathways that run either side of the canal look like Grandpa's original too. The angle that Google streetview shows is obviously wrong. This is from a freeway which seems new compared to when Grandpa would have been there so If anyone is nearby it might be worth trying to get a better viewpoint. This was sent through by Chad Byers who said he lives in the area and may be able to travel to this spot and check it out. No pressure Chad but please let me know if you get the time. Re-taking Grandpa's photos is one of the most special things I've ever done. It's also really tough to line everything up just right when you get there. Good luck - take a copy of Photo 31 on your phone if you can. Thanks to Chad for your email and everyone who is sending through new clues.
Please, check out all the clues.

Please, continue to send comments and clues,
every single one is appreciated.

And please, call your Grandpa.
